Whimsy

BY PAIGE DIRKSEN

ARTIST STATEMENT: When designing something for this space, I wanted to create something for the library that would be really playful and whimsical, hence the mural’s title, “Whimsy. I wanted to strike a balance between something really colorful and engaging, while still having a sense of serenity to it. The space is so beautiful and I was really inspired by the nature surrounding the library, so there are a lot of elements to the design that have a nod to the flora and fauna surrounding us. I really enjoy working on abstract designs, because I’m mostly interested in hearing from viewers what they see in the mural. I would encourage any parents and library staff to ask children visiting the library what they observe.

WHEELS IN MOTION

BY STEVIE STEVENS
ARTIST STATEMENT: I created this piece to catch attention with splashy mirrors and colors. As people drive into the library parking lot, they will see the mosaic change colors and sparkle. The intent for the mural is to merge the excitement for our beautiful outdoor scenery, biking, and public art.

FIRE FLY'S

BY TOM FLYNN
ARTIST STATEMENT: Who hasn’t chased a blinking firefly on a warm summer night? Inspiring poets and scientists and the childlike wonder in all of us, some would argue it is our most beloved insect. Created by local artist Tom Flynn these sculptures have captured the whimsy of the lightning bug in his creative production of found object metal art. Tom has been doing found object metal art for the last 15 years. 6) fireflies sculptures are installed around the building. The 1st is on the stone wall, left side entering the building from the parking lot. The 2nd and 3rd are in the garden plaza area on the right side of the building. The 3 remaining fire flies are installed along the large expanse of windows on the back side of the building and can be viewed from the children’s area of the library. They each have a yellow bulb that will light up at dusk and stay lit until dawn.

VOICE OF THE GARDEN & FLYING JEWEL

BY GRAHAM EDWARDS
ARTIST STATEMENT: “Voice of the Garden” and “Flying Jewel” are two murals that showcase two important workers of The Natural State; a bee and a hummingbird. With the magnitude of attractions to see in Arkansas, it can be easy to forget the smallest among us who make this region so beautiful. The bee is perched upon the Arkansas state flower, an apple blossom, pollinating the surrounding flowers ensuring their growth for the season. The Hummingbird is one of the most unique birds Arkansas is able to accommodate. The subject chosen for this mural is seen hovering and gathering nectar from a honeysuckle. They, too, are pollinators, ensuring a diverse ecosystem for other animals to live on, though they themselves like to be left alone. However, when a group of hummingbirds are together it is called a “charm”. Their speed and agility are unlike other birds, flying backward and upside down making them a spectacle in any garden they inhabit.
